They say ”anyone” can grow vegetables “anywhere” so I want to prove them right. I have never grown veg in my life and although my herbs have come along very nicely I think veg might prove a little harder but I’m going to give it a go anyway. I took a trip to B&Q during the wekk and bought the cheating method of these little cuties above, maybe next year I will try seeds but for a beginner these little starting plants are perfect. I spent the week moving my herbs, turning the soil and getting the B&Q guy carry bag after bag of “multi purpose compost with john innes” to my car. Do I sound like I know what I’m doing? The weather was fabulous today so it was planting time in the Italian foodie house, wish me luck, I’ll keep you updated and if I can grow them then really anybody can grow them but if I fail……….

hopefully I’ll be eating lots of insalate from this little baby…

you dig a hole and plant – EASY PEASY!!! We’ll see….

bru getting his hands dirty….

I may have got a little over excited by this bean but it is a REAL bean in my back garden:)

Ah, good luck with your veg Lors! I was out planting peas and beans today myself, that an keeping an eye on my spuds. There’s nothing quite like having the makings of dinner come directly from the garden
Thanks spud, I’ve been following your potato growing, looking good! Have you grown veg before or are you a newbie like moi?
Theres no shame in buying plants. Lots of plants are difficult or labor intensive to germinate yourself, so cheating a bit is worth it to make sure you get a good harvest.
We always buy our peppers and tomatoes for instance, since our season is so short, and we cba to start them as seeds in march in a windowsill.
Other stuff like peas, carrots, beans etc are easier to start directly as seeds.
.. anyways, I wish you good luck with the gardening.
those are the exact same plants that I bought! whoop whoop! and mine are thriving…..which is a result…..and a surprise…..
Seems like everyone is planting veg this year. have got myself some raised beds this year and have noticed all the DIY stores really stoking up on veg and fruit. More so than last year, must be the ‘R’ word or everyone turning into Jamie Oliver! pucka!!
Can’t wait for my sweet peas to be ready! nothing better than picking a pod straight from the garden and eating raw in the sun!!
Hah! Looks like we’re both doing the same thing! (see my first post in ages)
Good luck, and fingers crossed…
Growing veggies in your backyard is such a good feeling.
How exciting! Best of luck with the veggies, they already look lovely. Great pics!
Nice Bean! Lorraine, I must say, you do seem to have rather HAIRY ARMS!!!!
Lars – thanks a mil, I might need your help along the way:)
Manuel – we can be veggie buddies;) When did you plant yours? and why are mine not thriving after a week, I checked them everyday (no I’m not obsessed)
Scotsaute – ya I’ve noticed a huge interest, I think there is a lot more info, discussion etc in the media. I always thought you needed lots of space so I never considered it…
afos – yay welcome back, we can be veggie buddies too:)
FH – it really is, a bit obsessed at the mo, nearly camping out beside them except for the rain:)
aoife – thanks:) come on jump on the bandwagon!!
Katrina – I did’t have time to wax OK!! now everybody will know, noone noticed until you opened your big mouth….:)
Don’t worry about buying starter plants instead of sewing from seeds. Some plants work out much better this way as they are difficult to start from seed. We only have a tiny Dublin balcony but we’re trying to grow as much food as possible on it this year. For the past few weeks we’ve had all our own lettuce, and we’re looking forward to tomatoes and even potatoes later in the year!
I document everything over at my balcony gardening blog.
Cheese – well done you, great blog! I will be a regular reader for sure:) I think the starter plants are the best way for a novice, next year I might try seeds…
