Hi Lloraine,i mentioned in an earlier reply,my experience as a type 2 diabetic and you seem on the same food path.I try to get a walk in as often as possible after my main meal.Enjoyed a small dry cider with ice instead of the red stuff,seems a good substitute.Watch rice pushes sugar up.Check sugar level with finger prick meter,you will see which foods push the sugar up.Love all your recipes,just try small portions!

Hi Italian Foodie

A brilliant post on restaurant service. We had a baby last year so we haven’t been eating out as regularly. Went for lunch last Sunday in a new place that opened recently in Galway. Was looking forward to it. It was grand but nothing special which is really a pity as we would have told all our friends if it was good.

Last week I delivered a training session on ‘services blueprints’. This is a process map which sets out step by step the experience of the person receiving a service. It also highlights the role of staff and the system at each point. It is a great tool to think about how a customer should be treated and how a service such as a restaurant should be set up to facilitate staff to provide good food and service.

It was amazing that the new place we went to got it wrong so quickly. There was no reception area to the restaurant and no signs so we didn’t know where to go. It took ages for the staff to stop to talk to us and then she just told us to find a table. We had booked but they hadn’t bothered to take a record of it. We also had requested a baby chair but it was taken by someone else. The other thing which really annoyed me during lunch was that there was a flickering light in the corner.

At the end of the day the food was pretty good and good value. This shows the potential of the place. Needless to say we didn’t complain – happy that I didn’t have to do the washing up.

Must search the site for recipes for my little one. Loves her grub!

Love roasted veg, love your rant (so true!)
To be honest, the reason I never ever order pasta in an Irish restaurant is exactly because I know it will never be as good as what I cook at home… And I am no chef…. Not enough pasta, dry, with a dollop of no-personality sauce in the middle? No thanks. Soup is another no no. How many times is the stuff just out of a can?
My son learned from an early age to stay as far away as possible from anything called “child menu”. From the age of 5 he “demanded” the adult menu, and chose carefully from there. Bad for my pocket but I can’t blame him…the boy likes his food…
I so wish I had an excuse to go to Limerick to try your food… I am sure I would be tempted to break this rule of mine and get a very satisfying bowl of pasta!

I totally agree on all of your points…as an American and used to a much higher level of customer service (and yes, perhaps even regarding as OTT), I have come to just expect terrible service here in restaurants, that way I don’t feel as disappointed. Of course, there are a few good ones that never disappoint such as La Cucina. We often find ourselves having Sunday lunch at hotel restaurants where I’ve noticed there seems to be more of a point of making the customers happy…(?)

As usual great to see I’m not alone! I don’t even know what the answer to this is because unless there is demand of better standards by the majority nothing will change. Your complaint is just a lost voice, Karen I completely agree complaining in a place you eat regularly but I don’t see the point in a place that you can see the standards are bad across the board but still busy! I remember last summer asking an award winning restaurant in if their fish goujons for kids were home-made, you’d swear I had asked her to sell me her first born, she was not impressed at all and made a point that I knew it! The worst thing was she was the owner, she’s not normally questioned about anything and her reaction was basically how dare I question her! Anyway the goujons weren’t home-made and it was a seafood restaurant by the sea???? WTF? Not good enough! Anyway the service wasn’t good at all, the food was ok and the place was jammed, she didn’t lose any sleep that night over me so I vote with my feet and tell the whole world about my experience in the shop because I get asked a lot about where to eat……

I couldn’t agree more!
My boyfriend celebrated his birthday a few weeks ago and because we didn’t want to travel too far for a meal out, we decided to celebrate with a special meal at home. Why? Because what I cook at home is usually much better than the overpriced food you usually get served in local restaurants.

I don’t think I’m fussy either. In fact, I know I’m not. All I want is good quality food cooked well at a reasonable price and served by someone who is professional and pleasant. It’s depressing that this seems to be too much to ask.

One of the worst examples of service I ever had was being served a risotto that was swimming in rancid olive oil in a restaurant in Cork. There was so much oil that I couldn’t eat more than a mouthful. It felt as though I was eating oil soup with rice in it! When I complained, I was told that risotto was supposed to be like that and what did I know as I wasn’t Italian! My retort that I often make risotto at home and had eaten it many times in Italy made no difference whatsoever. They refused to admit their food was horrible!

I’m about to go into a rant now so I’ll stop there and go back to work (which is what I should be doing on a Monday morning, not browsing through blogs!)

I agree with you on level of service and the ‘basics’ lacking in many places (even those considering themselves at the top of their game!) but I always complain when I feel the need. And even more so in places where I eat regularly – if something isn’t right and I like the place, I am not doing them any service by simply withdrawing my custom without letting them know why.
